Background of the Study

Customer engagement has become a cornerstone of modern business strategies, as it directly influences customer loyalty, satisfaction, and revenue generation. Supermarkets, particularly in competitive markets like Niger State, rely heavily on engagement strategies to attract and retain customers. Effective customer engagement fosters trust, enhances brand loyalty, and drives repeat purchases, ultimately boosting revenue.

Studies by Okafor et al. (2023) emphasize that customer-centric strategies, such as personalized marketing, loyalty programs, and interactive communication, significantly impact revenue growth. In Niger State, supermarkets face challenges such as intense competition, fluctuating consumer preferences, and economic constraints. Customer engagement strategies, therefore, serve as a vital tool for maintaining competitiveness and driving profitability.

Despite the growing recognition of the importance of customer engagement, many supermarkets in Niger State lack a comprehensive understanding of its impact on revenue generation. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining the relationship between customer engagement strategies and revenue generation, providing insights into best practices for supermarket management.

Statement of the Problem

Supermarkets in Niger State face declining revenue due to increasing competition, economic challenges, and changing consumer behaviors. While customer engagement strategies are known to enhance revenue generation, their adoption and effectiveness among supermarkets in the state remain underexplored.

Research by Abdullahi and Musa (2024) highlighted that supermarkets with higher levels of customer engagement experience increased sales and customer retention. However, many supermarkets in Niger State lack the resources or expertise to implement effective engagement strategies. This gap has led to missed opportunities for revenue growth and long-term customer relationships.

This study addresses the problem by investigating the relationship between customer engagement strategies and revenue generation in supermarkets in Niger State. The findings will inform practical strategies to enhance customer engagement and improve profitability.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between customer engagement strategies and revenue generation in supermarkets in Niger State.

  2. To identify the most effective customer engagement strategies used by supermarkets in the state.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving customer engagement to enhance revenue generation.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between customer engagement strategies and revenue generation in supermarkets in Niger State?

  2. What customer engagement strategies are most effective for supermarkets in the state?

  3. How can customer engagement strategies be improved to increase revenue?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive relationship between customer engagement strategies and revenue generation.

  2. Personalized marketing strategies significantly enhance customer retention and revenue growth.

  3. Loyalty programs are among the most effective strategies for driving revenue in supermarkets.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on supermarkets operating in Niger State. It examines their customer engagement strategies and their impact on revenue generation. The study is limited to supermarkets and does not include other retail businesses. Additionally, variations in customer preferences across different regions may limit the generalizability of the findings.
